Keeping an Old Counseling Job Fresh

April 23, 2009 at 02:46 PM by admin

In “Overcoming Job Burnout: How to Renew Enthusiasm for Work” by Dr. Beverly Potter,” job burnout is defined as “a malaise of the spirit in which motivation, that mysterious force that gets us moving is damaged or even destroyed.” Just like relationship enthusiasm, job enthusiasm waxes and wanes over time, and it takes work to stay motivated. When we can’t, we usually find a new job.

Although finding a new job is the default route for most suffers of job burnout, it’s not the only option. Training for counselors in the form of continuing education courses can help keep a job feeling fresh and challenging. When you’re learning new information and skills, you are much less likely to feel stagnant or uninterested in your work. Sign up for a McKissock class and discover how to revitalize your counseling work.

Why a Boarding School?

April 15, 2009 at 12:40 PM by admin

There are too many parents who watch the dreams and the hopes that they’ve had for their child disappear, only to be replaced by fear and uncertainty. Problems at school and other issues are often a sign of deeper, more lingering problems that even the best parents can’t cope with alone. Sometimes, a boarding school environment that caters to troubled youth is the right step to take to turn the life of your son or daughter around. If you’re not sure what else you can do to prevent your child from slipping further away, there is a good chance that there simply aren’t any more steps for you to take on your own. When the situation reaches that point, the best thing you can do to help your troubled teen is to get them the support that they need to get back on track. When this help means intensive therapeutic intervention, the round-the-clock supervision at a boarding school might be just what they need.

International Fire Services Accreditation Congress (IFSAC)

April 15, 2009 at 12:31 PM by admin

If you are thinking about becoming a firefighter, you may have already heard of the International Fire Services Accreditation Congress (IFSAC). That is because this organization is responsible for accrediting both public service certification programs and higher education fire-related degree programs. It is important to choose a fire academy that is approved by a state, as well as a member of IFSAC. The following is a quick guide to the IFSAC:

  • It is a nonprofit organization that exists to increase the level of professionalism of the fire service.
  • For a program to be accredited, a site team of three trained staff members examines all aspects of the applicant certification system in relation to the Criteria for Certificate Accreditation.
  • Many fire training companies list their programs as IFSAC accredited; however, according to IFSAC, there is no such thing. The best way to find out if the IFSAC has accredited a program is to view the list of members on their website. If a company is not on that list, it is not recognized or supported by the IFSAC.

Private School for Special Needs?

February 12, 2009 at 10:00 AM by admin

If you have a special-needs child who is currently attending public school, you may be wondering if a private institution would be better suited to meet their needs. Perhaps you worry that the number of students in Manhattan middle schools and high schools means that your child won’t get the personal attention that he or she needs. Or maybe you think that an institution like York Preparatory School would have a curriculum better suited to your special needs student. However, many parents might be surprised to learn that a New York City private school might not be the best option for their boy or girl.

There are education laws that require public schools to provide an education for all children. This includes special-needs children. A NY private school, on the other hand, is permitted to be as selective as it wants. While a public school is required to provide special-needs children with the programs they need, you may find that a given private school in New York doesn’t have any special education programs that will give your child the care and attention needed to succeed in school. While York Prep and any other private school in New York will work to provide all students with the assistance that they need, the truth is that you may be forced to pay out of pocket for these extra resources, on top of the already pricey tuition fee. When it comes to choosing a public or private school in New York for your special needs student, you might find that the public school system is better equipped than you expected.

Do Spelling and Grammar Really Matter?

January 15, 2009 at 03:40 PM by admin

The advent of spell checker has done much to further the fields of business and academic editing. However, there is simply no substitute for a sharp human eye. Consider the following:

Ode to My Spell Checker

Eye halve a spelling checker
It came with my pea sea.
It plainly marks four my revue miss steaks eye kin knot sea.
Eye strike a quay and type a word and weight for it to say
Weather eye yam wrong oar write.
It shows me strait a weigh as soon as a mist ache is maid.
It nose bee fore two long and eye can put the error rite.
Its rare lea ever wrong.
Eye have run this poem threw it,
I am shore your pleased to no.
Its letter perfect awl the way.
My checker told me sew.

Obviously, this is example satirizes our reliance on spell checkers, but it illustrates the need for quality editors, particularly in the field of business editing. In the world of commerce, a misspelling or misplaced modifier could mean the loss of a contract, stagnancy or profit loss, and loss of professional credibility. Dictum meum pactum (“my word is my bond”) is never truer than in written communication between businesses. Spelling and grammar really do matter. Treat your writing as you would treat your health and always get a second opinion when it comes to editing your work.
