Emergency Generators for Personal Use

July 09, 2009 at 11:01 AM by admin

If you are looking at emergency generators for personal use, the range of options available on the market can be overwhelming. A quick online search shows dozens of brands and models. Before you start comparison shopping, it’s important to understand your own power generation needs.
After all, there’s no point in spending thousands of dollars on a 1000 kw diesel generator to power your house. Here are some tips:

  • Understand how much voltage you need. A light bulb only takes 60 watts, but something like internal air conditioning or a heat pump can take up to 30,000 watts to start and 15,000 to run.
  • Are you willing to stagger your power usage? It might not be possible to have full power at your house or office on a single 40 kw generator, but you can power certain appliances while keeping others turned off.
  • Do you need an inverter or a generator? Simple invertors plugged into a car’s cigarette lighter adapter can power up to 200 watts of appliances, without the fuel, noise or need for engine maintenance. But invertors will drain power from your car battery.

New Lettuce Harvester to Use Water Jet Technology

June 18, 2009 at 03:52 PM by admin

According to notes from the United Fresh 2009 expo by The Packer, specialized harvesting manufacturer Ramsay Highlander, Inc. plans to release in June a patented commercial lettuce harvester that uses water jets. Advantages of using water cutting for lettuce harvesting, says Ramsay Highlander CEO Frank Maconachy, include food safety. Water jets’ precision cutting will not cause bleeding or browning as conventional harvesters sometimes do.

Although it is best known for things like glass cutting, water jet technology’s efficacy in food cutting has long been established. Food Production Daily magazine wrote in 2005 that “water jet technology is one of the fastest growing major machine tool processes in the world due to its versatility and ease of operation…The technology offers processors sanitary advantages over other mechanical cutting methods, since there is no bacterial transfer from food to food or from tool to food. There is also no downtime for sharpening as there is with knives. Operator safety is improved because water jets can be remotely controlled by robotics.”

Using water jets for food cutting has also gained popularity due to its preservation of the material being cut and the very small kerf width—this means that very little food is wasted in the process. Additionally, water jet cutting does not produce harmful vapors or hazardous materials.

Free-Space Mezzanines

June 05, 2009 at 08:31 AM by admin

There are many ways to expand your industrial or commercial workspace without having to spend a lot of time and money. Free-space mezzanines can help create a second level to your limited floor space, allowing you to use the area for whatever you need, including conveyor support, an office, or storage space. It is also possible to create industrial stairs, landings, handrails, and mezzanine gates to ensure safety and easy access to all important areas.

Typically, free-space mezzanines are custom-made to accommodate the specific needs of the client, which avoids unwanted or unused building space. The engineering company usually starts with your existing operation and site conditions and creates a structure that works harmoniously with your ongoing operations. For example, customized free standing mezzanines can be created to accommodate your specific material handling equipment or shelving system.

New Technology Captures, Reuses Waste Heat

April 28, 2009 at 11:32 AM by admin

Greater efficiency can pay big dividends, whether it’s a more efficient 40 kw generator or a more efficient 400 kw generator. Jonathan Fahey of Forbes reports that researchers at Oregon State University (OSU), through a partnership with Pacific Northwest National Laboratory, are developing a device that will improve efficiency by capturing waste heat and using it to power other applications. The device will be first used by the U.S. Army, which will attach the device to the exhaust systems of its diesel generators. The captured heat will then power air conditioners that keep the electronics at the army’s mobile command centers cool during battle.

An estimated 75% of the energy used to power the army’s generators becomes waste heat, according to the Forbes article. And because the air conditioners require about half of the electricity produced by the generators, funneling the waste heat into other uses could result in much greater efficiency and more available electricity for communications equipment while also reducing fuel consumption by as much as 30% and offsetting some of the hundreds of dollars in costs of running the generators. Moreover, the technology could also reduce the number of generators needed in the field.

If successful, the technology could also be applied to other kinds of motors in the future, although it is still too expensive to commercialize in the short term.

Keep up with the latest developments and technology through General Power Limited. Whether your application calls for a 10 kw diesel generator or a 1000 kw diesel generator, the experts at General Power Limited can advise on sizing and installation and create a customized power package. 28.5 Volts?

March 16, 2009 at 09:20 AM by admin

While older aircrafts generally used a 12-volt power supply, the aircraft being built today use a 24-volt battery. These aircraft batteries are actually comprised of a dozen 2 volt cells, which means a lower cost and smaller wire size. The latter is particularly useful, as one can transfer more power through smaller wires with less loss via heat or resistance when you use the higher voltage. Generally, if one wants to charge this type of battery, you will need a GPU or other external power source that is rated at 28.5-volts. This might seem confusing to the layman that doesn’t have experience with this type of system, but the starter motors or generators on turbine generators are generally rated to accept as much as 30 volts without being damaged, which is why the voltage rating on a portable power unit might not always be exactly what one would theoretically expect if they were just playing the numbers game..

Another issue that must be kept in mind with an aircraft engine or military tank starter is the potential voltage drop that occurs as the load applied to the battery increases. When the starter is first activated, this is when the maximum amperage draw is achieved. The amperage requirement drops during the start cycle, but the battery needs to be in good condition if you want to minimize voltage drop. A 28.5-volt start is also recommended if you want to reduce voltage drop.

Origins of the FQA

January 27, 2009 at 10:02 AM by admin

Every day, the safety of millions of people depends on tiny bits of metal that few people ever think about: fasteners.  Nuts, bolts and more hold together the cars that we drive, the bridges we cross, the airplanes we ride in, and much more.  Every day, our well-being depends on a wide variety of fasteners, which we assume will keep things in place.

However, our trust at times is unfortunately misplaced.  In the mid 1980′s, product failures brought to light the fact that not all fasteners on the market were performing as they were intended.  A two year study commenced shortly after this, with Congress leading an investigation into the industry that produces the machine screws and other fasteners used by manufacturers all over the country.    The results of the investigation were disheartening.  It was found that there were millions of mismarked, counterfeit, and just plain substandard fasteners in the market, many of which had been introduced via import.  The use of these unacceptable fasteners was a real threat to product safety and reliability.

Because of these findings, the Fastener Quality Act (FQA) was passed.  This act, signed by President Bush in 1990, was intended to protect the safety of the public by reducing the risk of fastener failure, from metric dowel pins to imperial screws and more.   The law was meant to regulate the enforcement and monitoring of the standards and labeling in the fastener industry.

Wood Fencing Offers Choices

January 21, 2009 at 09:54 AM by admin

For home owners, a new fence can give a property a novel look, privacy, a safe play area for children, or area where pets can walk freely. Owners should consider the architecture of their home, as well as their natural surroundings, when choosing the material for a fence. Options include wood, vinyl, chain link, rock, aluminum—and each has its own advantages.

Wood fencing is a popular choice. Wood offers a look that matches nearly any style of architecture from rustic to ultra modern. In addition, wood blends in with any environment whether dry and rocky, plush and green, or a combination of both as seen along coastlines or lakefront areas. Styles of wood fencing range from split rail fences with a rustic, country look to picket fences with traditional appeal. Larger wooden fences provide privacy while enhancing the appearance of a property with taller boards placed side by side.

Some owners feel that wood fences are less durable than vinyl or metal; however, woods like cedar are remarkably long-lasting. Cedar trees grow in the Northeast, known for its humid and rainy weather, so this wood has natural rot-resistant properties and holds up well in tough climates. For fencing, Salem residents and others in cities throughout Oregon and Washington frequently prefer wood fences and tend to go with cedar. Whatever the locale, wood can be the ideal visual compliment to a home and the surrounding terrain.

Gondola Shelving

January 06, 2009 at 10:17 AM by admin

From beauty supplies to auto parts, gondola shelving is a classic way to display your merchandise. With a clean and organized look, you can create a comfortable environment for your customers to shop in. However, with a little creativity, you can also enhance your store’s design and reflect your unique sense of style.

Gondola display shelves can provide the right amount of style and color you need to set your store apart from the competition. This is because gondola shelves are available in a wide variety of lengths, widths, backings, and colors. For the best results, make sure the specific dimensions of the shelves are in proportion to the items you wish to display. To add unique texture, choose a different type of shelf backing, such as transparent, semi transparent, solid, and grid. For a touch of personality, steer away from white, gray or black shelves. Instead, choose from a spectrum of brighter colors or match the existing color scheme in your store.

To complete the overall look and create merchandise excitement, you can also add grid extenders and end units. In addition, these features will surely enhance sales. For even more variety to your retail space, consider converting a gondola section into a movable merchandise center. A gondola on wheels with a grid-wall back is an ideal display to hang smaller merchandise from hooks, such as gloves, jewelry, or other smaller items.
