Protecting Your Rental Car and Your Belongings

Although Portugal has a relatively low crime rate, after you leave your Faro car hire, you should be on the lookout for potential vandalism and burglaries. A rental car from a Portugal car hire without local license plates can be a prime target. Here are a couple of pointers from the U.S. Department of State to remember to keep the car and your belongings protected:

  • Upon parking, place all luggage in the trunk or remove it from the vehicle so that it is not visible.
  • Keep the doors locked at all times, especially when stopped at intersections. If possible, roll up windows.
  • Use your best judgment and caution when deciding where to park. Popular tourist areas are often targeted more frequently. However, poorly lit or difficult-to-access areas can pose a threat as well.
  • Before entering the vehicle, always make sure the rear seat is empty.
  • Choose well-traveled streets over rural streets whenever possible.
  • Keep the car well-maintained to avoid breakdowns.
  • Don’t pick up strangers or hitchhikers.
  • If you can, switch cars at the nearest car hire—Portugal has many—to avoid becoming a target. Also, try not to develop predictable patterns.
  • Always be aware of your surroundings, and report suspicious activity to local law enforcement officials.
